Poster Presentation Call for Abstracts:
The New Practitioner Committee is requesting submission of abstracts for presentation at the 2020 Mid-Winter Meeting January 24-26, 2020 in Albany, NY at the Albany Hilton in Albany.
Abstract submitted via this link no later than December 6, 2019 at 11:59 pm. Submissions received after this date will not be accepted for review; there will be no on-site registration for this program.
Guidelines for eligibility and submission:
- Current active membership in:
- SPSSNY member and enrolled in a NYS college of pharmacy
- A new practitioner (pharmacist within 5 years post-graduation)
- The abstract must:
- Submit using Microsoft Word
- Maximum of 600 words, minimum 12 pt font
- Must include:
- Proofread carefully, paying particular attention to numerical values; changes cannot be accepted after the deadline.
- The abstract type must be indicated in the Microsoft Word file name:
- "Case Reports”
- “Completed Research”
- “In Progress”
- “Theoretical Model”
- Broad Categories for research include:
- Basic Sciences (Biologic/Chemistry/Pharmacology)
- Clinical Sciences/Research
- Literature/Systematic Reviews
- Practice-Based Pharmacy
- Patient Education Services
- Economic & Administrative Sciences
- Abstracts with a commercial tone will not be accepted.
- Research must have been conducted and/or completed within the calendar year of submission. (2019)
- The submission must include contact information (name, e-mail, and phone) for all authors. Note primary contact person in bold. Separately list any faculty or other mentors that were consulted.
- Any financial incentives or honorarium received during the research period must be disclosed at time of submission.
- One or two exhibitors may present the accepted posters in person, and names must be noted at time of submission. Expenses incurred to present in person are the responsibility of the presenters.
- Primary author may not be listed on multiple posters for this session.
- There is no limit to the number of submissions that will be reviewed from each college.
- The research/abstract may be presented in multiple showcases; i.e. acceptance to another poster session, professional meeting, or campus presentation is allowed. Disclosure must be noted at time of submission (“accepted to XYZ Meeting” “abstract submitted to XYZ” etc.)
- The New Practitioner Committee will review the abstracts based upon criteria, and the PSSNY staff will contact those accepted.
Guidelines for Accepted Posters:
- Presenters accepted for poster session must be registered for the meeting within 10 days of receipt of e-mail acceptance for this program. Membership dues must be current.
- Presenters must respond to the acceptance e-mail within 5 days or staff will remove them from the program.
- Board posters may not exceed 36" by 48"; foam core and a display easel will be provided for each poster.
- Presenters are responsible for poster transport and display.
- A/V will not be permitted as part of the session.
- Presenters will be informed of their assigned evaluation time, which will be determined in advance by the New Practitioner Committee. If two exhibitors are presenting, both must be present during the entire evaluation period.
Again, students are responsible for set up and break down of their posters. Posters are to be set up before the Solutions Center opens and must be removed at the end of the day. PSSNY staff is not responsible for posters not removed by students. Those presenting are encouraged to remain in the Solutions Center to engage with other attendees on their research. Handouts for attendees/evaluators are permitted and may expand on poster information; printing is the sole responsibility of the presenters.
Accepted abstracts will be listed in the program materials at the meeting and posted to the website. Abstracts will be considered for publication in PSSNY’s journal, New York State Pharmacist.
Winners will be judged and evaluated on the following categories:
- Poster design/layout
- Presentation Style
- Poster Content
Business Case Plan Competition:
- The competition will take place at the PSSNY Mid-Winter Meeting (January 24-26th, 2020). Date, time and location will be communicated once meeting schedule is finalized.
- The competition is open to individuals or teams of up to four students enrolled at colleges of pharmacy in New York State.
- All participants must be registered for the PSSNY Mid-Winter Meeting no later than November 30, 2019; pre-registered for the competition; and current SPSSNY members (unless no chapter exists at their School of Pharmacy). Note: Meeting registration opens in September; competition registration is open now.

- The case will be presented to the contestants upon receipt of letter of intent
- Students are expected to form teams and align with a faculty mentor at their School of Pharmacy who will provide guidance, assist in the learning process, and help connect students with community contacts who can provide additional support/guidance. In addition, teams must name a PSSNY member who will serve the team as a consultant for questions or guidance.
- A letter of intent to join the competition is due to the business plan panel by the end of day on October 1, 2019. At a minimum, please include in this letter: names of group members (maximum 4), pharmacy school or college name, name of faculty mentor, and name of community pharmacy PSSNY member (consultant). These are all required. The letter of intent can be sent to email@example.com.
- The deadline for submission is November 27, 2019 (by 11:59:59p.m.). There are no exceptions for late submissions. Submissions can be made via this link.
- All questions about the case should be sent to Kara Wilcox at firstname.lastname@example.org no later than November 1, 2019 (by 11:59:59p.m.). Answers to those questions will be sent to all contestants to ensure fairness. The committee will answer no questions about the case after this time.
- The deliverable includes a response to the case question(s) and submission of a concise business plan to the judges.
- The business plan should be in PDF or MS Word format no more than twenty five pages in length (minimum 12 point font, single spaced, one-inch margins, including tables/graphs/photos).
- Judges will review and score the submissions. The top three (3) ranking teams will be invited to present their summaries live at the Mid-Winter Meeting. Guidelines for the live presentation will follow submissions.
- Participants are not limited with regard to the resources utilized to create the response and the summary (e.g. websites, reference books, live interviews with mentors/employers/wholesalers, etc.).
- Participants shall not receive assistance or advice from the PSSNY Business Plan Committee Members. If a committee member is contacted by a student then the committee member should respond accordingly.
- Case studies, documents or any materials that have been previously submitted to local or national competitions (e.g. NCPA) or as part of course work for class will not be accepted.
- This case was produced by the Business Plan Committee and cannot be used as part of coursework or curriculum at Schools of Pharmacy (past or present).
- Monetary prizes will be awarded to the teams that come in 1st / 2nd / 3rd place and be presented at the Mid-Winter Meeting.
