· Identify medications approved for the treatment of diabetes which can promote weight loss;

· Determine when it would be beneficial to add a prescription weight loss medication to a treatment plan.

Knowledge-based Activity

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

· Describe physiologic changes in the elderly that lead to changes in sensitivity to psychoactive medications

· Describe the four major dopamine tracts, dopamine receptor functions, and serotonin receptor functions

· Name the commonly prescribed psycho-active classes of medication in the elderly and their pharmacologic bases

· Discuss common adverse events in the elderly due to psycho-active medication use

· Identify strategies that help reduce the potential for harm in the elderly due to psychoactive medication usage.

Target audience: Pharmacists and student pharmacists in all practice settings.
